AVOCA HOUSE

Briefed as a ‘classic beach house’ the intention was to preserve the sentiment of the original family holiday home but replace it with a new weatherboard and sandstone dwelling. The design seeks to provide a new space for the family to relax, reflect and unwind. The humble nature of the dwelling reflects the laid back beachside atmosphere of the area.

The shared living spaces flow directly onto an expansive low-level deck which folds down to beach level in a series of wide stepped terraces and connecting garden. The terraces additionally provide informal seating for the family to gather together and enjoy the yard while overlooking the beach. An internal courtyard provides outdoor entertaining and shelter from the sometimes harsh coastal breezes.

While still aspiring for a traditionally styled ‘beach-house’ there was still a need to be make provision for modern lifestyles and desires reflected in the clean lines of the Kitchen and Bathrooms and the luxurious fittings and fixtures throughout, these moments of old meets new created opportunity for some elegant yet subtle detailing.

The materials palette includes hand-laid natural sandstone, weatherboard, mixed hardwoods, stainless steel, corrugated roof sheeting and natural anodised aluminium- framed windows.
