NORTH AVOCA RESIDENCE

Perched above the coastline at North Avoca, Darkinjung Country, the Horizon House has been reconfigured to strengthen its connection to the surrounding landscape and coastal context. The renovation focuses on refining spatial organisation and enhancing light penetration, rather than expanding the building footprint.

The new layout improves circulation and spatial clarity, with living areas oriented to the water to maximise views of the horizon, while bedrooms frame and engage with the adjacent bushland. Expansive glazing facilitates a seamless visual connection between interior and exterior, dissolving boundaries between inside and out.

A pitched roof with raked ceilings introduces additional daylight and warmth, while maintaining a balanced, lightweight presence within the site. The central staircase connects all levels, allowing light to filter through the core of the home and establishing a visual and spatial spine.

Outdoor terraces extend living spaces toward the landscape, enabling direct engagement with the surrounding environment. Material choices—including soft render, pale timber, and glass—are restrained, supporting the natural qualities of light and view, and reinforcing the home’s integration with its coastal and bushland setting.
