WAMBERAL BEACH HOUSE

When our clients secured their new beachfront property at Wamberal, they approached Slater Architects to design a family beach house that would make the most of its spectacular setting while responding to the practical challenges of living directly on the foreshore.

As an active family of five, their lifestyle shaped the design from the outset. The brief called for generous, flexible living spaces that encourage time together, alongside private areas for retreat. The home also needed to withstand the harsh coastal environment and the site’s exposure to coastal erosion, ensuring long-term resilience against severe storm events.

Design Approach

The architecture pairs strong, durable materials with carefully refined detailing. Exposed stonework anchors the home to its site, while extensive glazing captures uninterrupted ocean views and draws natural ventilation throughout the interiors. A central skylight introduces daylight into the stair void, creating a vertical connection that links all levels of the home.

The upper floor accommodates private bedrooms and living spaces with direct visual connections to the sea. In contrast, the ground floor is designed for family interaction, with generous open-plan areas flowing onto terraces and landscaped outdoor zones that engage directly with the beachfront.

Interiors

A restrained palette of concrete, stone, and natural finishes balances durability with warmth, providing a neutral backdrop that keeps the focus on space, light, and views. Joinery was custom-designed throughout the home to maximise functional storage while also contributing to the interior aesthetic. The detailing draws inspiration from luxury resort-style interiors, with refined finishes and integrated elements that provide a sense of cohesion, comfort, and understated sophistication.

Planning & Lifestyle

Practical considerations were central to the design. With limited street parking, the basement was planned to accommodate at least six cars and to integrate extensive storage for surfboards, watersport equipment, and beach gear. This level also incorporates a gym, reflecting the family’s active lifestyle and their desire for a home that supports both recreation and relaxation.
